One kind VLC Streamer user has built a helper for Linux.
It is at an early (command line) stage – but it works, and if you are interested, you can give it a try!

My new app just went live. It uses VLC to convert movies into the format needed to stream them to your iPhone, iPod or iPad.
It can handle most movie types, and can start streaming your movie within 10 seconds or so.
Now your whole movie collection is available on your iPod or iPad without syncing or converting.
The full version is $0.99
Or the free version (with annoying ads) is available to let you try it out.
Just got the email from Apple saying that they have approved 5.50 for iPhone/iPad.
You should be able to update it from the App Store now.
-Added ability to browse YouTube videos and play them on your computer
-Added ability to share what you are watching in Facebook, Twitter, etc..
-Added indicator to show which item in playlist is playing
-Fixed the subtitles autoload problem
-Fixed the problem with deleting skins
And you can now follow VLC Remote on Facebook…

I have a few new apps coming up, and improvements for the existing ones.
The next app in line is related to VLC Remote – and I’m looking for beta testers.
If you are keen to try new things and let me know what you think, what works and what could be improved – then you might want to be a beta tester. You’ll have to be willing to use buggy software and let me know in careful detail what steps you took to cause problems.
It isn’t for everybody – but if you’d like to help steer my apps, then it might be for you.
If I could, then I’d let anyone who was interested be a tester – however Apple severely limits the number of testers I can have.
This means I’ll have to be picky. I tend to release lots of test versions in a row – so I’m keen to find people who will be able to test and respond quickly during the occasional flurries of testing.
I’ll also be looking for a variety of i-devices, and operating systems.
If you’d like to help then please send me:
1) what kind of i-devices you have, and what the uuid’s are for them (Google uuid if you don’t know what that is)
2) what operating system(s) you will be testing on
3) why you’ll be a great beta tester!

There was a stupid bug in version 1.32 which crashed when you opened the settings page.
That is now fixed in 1.33, but it might have been fixed a little sooner if I had got an email on the subject!
