Google just made it much easier for us to share beta versions with you, so we’d love to get more feedback from intrepid testers.
If you’re interested in trying out new features (and willing to risk the bugs) then please join our testing community and opt in to the tests.
VLC Streamer is now live and kicking on Android.
It lets you easily pick a movie that’s on your PC or Mac, and (almost) instantly stream it to your Android.
It’s a great way to watch movies in bed, or on your personal screen when other people are using the TV.
VLC Streamer is currently available at an introductory price of $1.
Update: VLC 2.0.3 has been released for Mac OS now – please update to this if you are getting fullscreen control problems.
Mac users: If you updated to VLC 2.0.2, then you’ll notice that there is a bug with the fullscreen control.
The http interface (which VLC Remote uses) simply isn’t working for fullscreen. I have contacted the VLC Mac developers and they have fixed this (Thank you!). They are planning a mini-release in the next few days, or you can download the nightly version from
I have tested the build dated 2012 07 14
you can download directly with these links (they’re also on the VLC Remote facebook page which is probably easier to get to from your computer)
32bit version: http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx-intel/vlc-2.0.2-i686-20120714-0218.zip
64bit version: http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx-intel/vlc-2.0.2-x86_64-20120714-0318.zip
thanks again to the VLC team for such a swift fix.
NB: these links are to a non-released version of VLC, so the standard use-at-your-own-risk warnings apply!
2.90 brings YouTube videos to VLC Remote on Android.
To use the feature, just tap on the normal browse icon, then tap on the TV icon in the browsing toolbar.
Now you can browse YouTube within VLC Remote for your favourite video. When you have the one you want to share, press the play icon at the bottom right of the screen for it to play on your Pc/Mac.
If you have multiple monitors connected to a mac, then this might interest you.
I just launched my first app in the Mac Appstore. It’s called Multi Monitor Wallpaper.
It lets you take one large image and apply it across your monitors.
You can move and scale the image, and even tweak the exact layout of your monitors.
My app cuts up the image and applies it across your screens.
Let me know what you think!
You can get it at the Mac Appstore
VLC 2.00 has been approved for release, so the new version should be hitting the front page of Videolan.org very soon.
==Update: It’s live now.
Please remember a few things when you upgrade:
1) Make sure you have the latest version of my setup helper. The older versions won’t correctly configure VLC 2.00
2) You will need to run the setup helper again when you upgrade – this is because some of the configuration settings get wiped with each upgrade.
On Windows, you need setup helper version 4.20, on Mac version version 3.30.
Click ‘Check for updates’ in your current setup helper or get ’em here.
If your browser is giving you an old version, then clear the cache or try in a different browser!
We have been working on version two for a few months now, and it has some really great functionality.
The main new feature is that it uses bonjour (where possible) to scan your home network for computers. This means that in most cases, you won’t have to do the pairing setup to get connected to VLC.
And there is a load of other stuff:
- added wheel-picker for fine grained position and volume
- favourite folders
- thumb scroller for browsing large folders
- full support for tablet devices
- improved power usage on widget
- numerous minor fixes
There will probably be some glitches (we have already had one report) – unfortunately, that’s pretty much a fact of life with Android as there are so many different devices, and we can’t even attempt to keep them all for testing.
If you do have any problems, then please email me at email@example.com and I’ll do my best to sort it out.
In the meantime – I hope you enjoy the update
– let me know what you think!
There was a stupid bug in version 1.32 which crashed when you opened the settings page.
That is now fixed in 1.33, but it might have been fixed a little sooner if I had got an email on the subject!
So – if there is any problem with VLC Remote, please do send me an email. You can use the feedback option in the settings page, or just write to firstname.lastname@example.org
VLC Remote is now translated into 17 languages.
All translations are by volunteers, so if something isn’t translated – or if you think you can do a better job then please head over to AppTranslate.com and provide your own translations.
You can translate a single string – or add an entirely new language.
The remote now has a home-screen widget.
This shows the current track and gives play/pause and previous/next track controls.
